Celebrate International Archaeology Day at Gordon Hall in Dexter on Saturday October 19 from 11 to 2.
Have you ever wanted to visit an archaeological dig? You don’t have to travel to exotic locales. We have plenty of history right here in Washtenaw County, and it is lying just beneath the surface of the ground, waiting to be explored. Join us at Gordon Hall in Dexter for a public Archaeology Day on Saturday October 19, International Archaeology Day. Archaeology students will share their methods and their discoveries as they perform excavations at several sites around the grounds of Gordon Hall. They will be looking for artifacts that will illuminate the lives of the people who have lived there, from the time the house was built in 1843 to the present. In addition to the dig sites, docents from the Dexter Area Historical Society (DAHS) will be on hand to answer questions about the history of Gordon Hall and its inhabitants. Anything of significance that is found will be inspected, cleaned, inventoried, and saved. “We are excited to continue this collaboration with the University of Michigan. They owned the site for over 50 years and this their second excavation since we bought it in 2006,” said Beverly Hill, President of DAHS.
