DAHS volunteers will be selling tickets on Friday evenings at the Gazebo in downtown Dexter during the Summer Concert Series, at the Chelsea Sights and Sounds Festival from July 27-29, and, of course, during Dexter Daze on August 11 and 12.]]><![CDATA[2017 Dexter Gordon Hall Days: A Country Fair]]>Fri, 24 Mar 2017 00:41:47 GMThttps://www.dexterhistory.org/blog/2017-dexter-gordon-hall-days-a-country-fairPicture
Our 2017 2nd annual Gordon Hall Days will be held on Saturday June 17th and Sunday June 18th.  We will be open from 10 to 5 both days with the Country Dance on Saturday from 6:30 to 9 pm.  A committee has been meeting since mid-January on Tuesday nights to come up with ideas and ways to implement them.  We welcome anyone who would like to join us as we go from the idea stage into the planning stage.
    This year's theme will be a Country Fair and we are planning an event reminiscent of the past.  We are looking into a "Midway" with booths full of games for all ages, a threshing demonstration, the Lions Food Wagon, popcorn booth, Cotton Candy, train rides, a petting zoo, and other activities.  Special events include Gordon Hall tours, a Tea and Fashion show, a Country Dance and our famous Pie Auction.  Further details will be coming as we work out the details.
    As we have done in the past, we will be seeking Sponsors for some of the events to help us defray costs.  We are looking for local merchants or groups interested in supporting our efforts.  Perhaps you work at a company that would be willing to help us so that our “profits” can all go to the restoration of Gordon Hall.
    We need your help to make this experience work.  Volunteers are needed for 2 to 4 hour shifts in all areas from manning the booths to working with the grounds committee to helping with the special events and everything in between.  Volunteering is one way you can help us in our quest to restore Gordon Hall.  To let us know when and how you can help us, just reply to DexMuseum@aol.com or leave a message at 734-426-2519.  Thank you.

The event will feature a visual tour of the architecture of the homes and buildings of Dexter, a chance to check out the new look at the Museum and our new exhibits. We will provide an array of hearty hors d’oeuvres and adult beverages.

MILT CAMPBELL’S CHRISTMAS VILLAGE DISPLAY THAT WAS DISPLAYED ANNUALLY AT HURON CAMERA WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT GORDON HALL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 15 YEARS!!!!

The Christmas At The Mansion program will begin on Friday, December 2 at which time the Christmas Village display will be complete and ready for viewing.  The Friday night event will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 with hearty hors d'oeuvres, spirits and desserts served. The cost will be $50 per person. And then on Saturday, December 3rd, Santa Claus will be visiting and children will be making their own gingerbread houses to take home. The Saturday hours will be 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and will include a $5.00 donation fee. 

So everyone is able to view the Christmas Village display, Gordon Hall will also be open on December 10, 18, 27 and 28 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  All of the rooms in Gordon Hall will be decorated so this should make an excellent start to your holiday season as well as providing a fun way to support the Dexter Area Historical Society.

If you're looking for an especially refined way to start your holiday season, reserve your spot today for our Christmas Tea at Gordon Hall. The tea will be a perfect way to begin the holidays in the decorated Gordon Hall. A perfect gift for friends or a perfect gift for yourself to relax in a Christmas setting. A light lunch with tea sandwiches and desserts will be served with your tea. Tea times will be 1 and 4 pm on Sunday, December 4th. Just a reminder that the Gordon Hall subcommittee will hold a kick-off meeting on Sunday, September 11 at 3 pm . Although we paid off our mortgage and received numerous grants for restoration, there are still many things that need to be attended to: additional grant opportunities, additional repair/maintenance items, additional rehab work (immediate and long term), event coordination and oversight, etc.  Our goal will be to identify all needs and opportunities and assign roles and responsibilities.

We will be meeting every other month but we are more of a doer committee. Please join us and help as we plan for the future of Gordon Hall.

Both days we will have our display of historic artifacts donated by friends and members in the Dexter Area and our special display on “Women’s Underpinings”, and Richard Ashley will be running the Hoatlin Model Trains in the basement.

The music will come from the Great American Songbook, as well as some classical and pop tunes. Using their voices, as well as wind and string instruments, they will present something that evokes the sound of local musicians greeting travelers as they arrive at the train station.

This program is produced by the Hudson Education Center, a Dexter-based 501(c)3 non profit.]]><![CDATA[Free Friday Night concert at Gordon Hall Days]]>Sat, 04 Jun 2016 12:09:10 GMThttps://www.dexterhistory.org/blog/free-friday-night-concert-at-gordon-hall-daysThe Dexter Area Historical Society is proud to present the “Clarinet Continuum” on Friday night, June 10th , from 6:30 to 7:30 as part of Gordon Hall Days. This is a free concert and is open to the public. This distinguished group of musicians have been playing together for twenty-five years and are part of the Dexter Community Band and other area community bands. They have done over one hundred fifty performances. 

Many of the songs that they will be playing have special arrangements that are customized for the group and some just for this event. Some of the train songs that you will hear are “Wabash Cannonball,” “Chattanooga Choo Choo,” and “Take the A Train.” This accomplished group has a medley of songs from the Gay 90s, George M. Cohan and “Oklahoma,”.  There will be some John Phillip Sousa marches like “The Washington Post” and “The Thunderer.” and the “Ashokan Farewell” theme song from Ken Burns' The Civil War.  In addition to all of this, you will hear them sing and play their kazoos. So, join us in the front of Gordon Hall for an hour of musical pleasure. This concert will end with a patriotic song “God Bless America.”

Following this will be Ms. Jenny VanHouten's first graders who will sing a medley of Patriotic songs from their concert in May from 7:30 to 8:00.]]><![CDATA[Gordon Hall Raffle Tickets]]>Sun, 22 May 2016 12:47:19 GMThttps://www.dexterhistory.org/blog/gordon-hall-raffle-ticketsThe Dexter Area Historical Society will again this year hold our raffle fundraiser to help preserve Gordon Hall.  This is our fourth year selling tickets for our $10,000 drawing which will be announced during Dexter Daze on August 13, 2016.
We have printed 4,000 tickets and we have from May until August to sell our tickets.  Most of our sales will be around Dexter with personal contact.  Many businesses will be selling tickets and the businesses that will not be selling we have personally met with to tell them about this fundraiser.
This has been a great fundraiser for the Historical Society and all funds go toward preserving Gordon Hall.  We will begin our sales on May 21st and you will see many of us around town with our green Gordon Hall shirts.  Our next sale will be May 28th and then from then on sales will take place throughout the summer months usually on  Friday and Saturday.  We will also be selling at the Dexter Farmers Market and someone will usually be there on Saturdays also throughout the summer.
We appreciate all of your tremendous support and look forward in hearing from all of you!!
